this episode is full of feelings. The love…dexter don’t hide the sentiment of love. He can’t. He can’t hide his feeling in the situation created in this episode. Dexter is pushed to a face to face with the reality, the true about his life and the truly love with rita. The end is obviously shocking, but it’s another gift to dexter’s fans. What will happen now? We’ll suffer together in this expectation.
Hi Jeremy,
Good initial recap on “The Getaway.”
A few thoughts…
With regard to the investigation, I think that the police are going to assume that Trinity went after Rita because he confused Dexter’s residence with Debra’s (since both are listed as D. Morgan). If you think about it, this was the whole point of the scene where Trinity went to Dexter’s old apartment which would have been a pointless scene, otherwise. Of course, we know otherwise (Trinity went there for the express purpose of killing Rita), but the police don’t know this and probably never will.
Anyway, as for next season, here’s how I see it playing out…
Debra, who just finally absolved herself of the guilt/shame from Season 1 (being kidnapped by Dexter’s brother) is now going to have to deal with a ton of guilt over Rita’s death. (As I mentioned above, the police are going to conclude that Trinity went to Dexter’s house with the intention of killing her, not Dexter [or Rita]).
Dexter, overcome with grief, is going to go on a blood rampage, throwing “the rules” out the door for at least a short time.
The kids (Harrison included) are going to wind up with Rita’s parents. But I’m betting the Dexter will reclaim Harrison by the end of next season.
Some degree of suspicion is going to fall on Dexter next season… Debra, Quinn and Angel all have reasons for being suspicious. Angel saw Dexter with the man later identified as Trinity at the police station. Quinn is quickly shaping up to be the new Doakes, especially now that he has a personal score to settle with Dexter. And Debra has to be wondering (or will at some point wonder) if Rita’s death on the heels of the reveal that Dexter and Rudy/Brian were bothers is just a coincidence… or if the reveal was too much for Dexter and he somehow snapped. Plus, everyone was suspicious of Dexter when they found him in Arthur Mitchell’s garage right after the police raid. He explained it away, but I’m sure that it will come up again in some fashion.

Where’s the next podcast, man? Been almost a month now. Only asking because I love the show. Hope you get it up soon and that you had happy holidays, Jeremy.
Hi, Jeremy! I loved your initial reaction… Can’t wait for the meaty follow up and the ‘lost episode!’
I agree with Mister Winter on most points, with just a few variations:
1)The investigation will be blamed on Trinity for attacking someone close to Deborah for payback on cracking his case. There will be some suspicion on Quinn’s behalf because he was already suspicious of Dexter in the first place (questioning where he went at lunch, why he was out so late, etc). I also think Angel will find it odd that that Trinity trounced right into the police station and he and Dex shook hands. But if you don’t already know the connection, or even that Dex kills folk, then you might just see that as a very brazen act by a psycho killer - one not out of character for what they’ve discovered about Arthur by this point.
I don’t think Deborah is going to suspect Dex for a number of reasons. Remember the speech she gave him when she told him who is mother & brother were? He was the only good thing that happend to her and she didn’t know what she’d ever do without him. Well, now this monster broke into her house, found the info on Dexter, went to Dexter’s house, killed his wife and left his baby sitting in his mother’s blood. That’s going to hit Deborah hard. To her, it will all have been her fault.
2) The kids come into question. Cody & Astor may end up spending some extended time w/the grandparents (they are actually their paternal grandparents as mentioned several times - Rita points out that the kids father was the abusive black sheep of the family but his parents are wonderful), but will come back home to Dex - that’s their home now and he’s more of a dad than they’ve ever had. I don’t think he’ll let Harrison out of his site, expect to make runs. He had already decided this was his family, these were his kids and he’d do whatever it took to protect them. Now that he’s let Rita down, he’s going to fight even harder to protect whats left of his family.
3) Dexter may be irrevocably broken. He had literally just come to terms with being human, not being a monster without emotion and feelings to have it tore from him. He’ll feel a pain that he’s never known imaginable and will have no way to seek retribution as he had already killed the monster. His jerk of a dad will continue to tell him it’s his fault, and in a way it is, he should have killed Arthur when he had the chance instead of waiting and trying to learn from him. Had he killed him then, both Arthur’s family and Dexter’s would be in a better place than season 4 left them in.
So…I am not remembering. Where are Astor and Cody when Rita was being killed? (Glad she’s dead btw, could NOT stand her). But, I can’t remember where her kids were….a little help?
Thanks!
Love the podcast. Wish you were more consistent in timing, but life is busy.

Dude, come on. Get on this. It’s been over 2 months now.
It’s been nearly three months and all we have still is just the initial reaction. I realize you’re not on a time crunch on this one like the others so you can take your time, but come on dude. We want the podcast!!!!!
I would love to hear a full show about this gutwrenching finale. My initial reaction would be that Trinity set up Dex and planted evidence to incriminate Dex. Dex could only defend himself if he shares his knowledge and experiences w TRinity.
